For some time there has been a thought that Chivas USA would eventually move out of the Home Depot Center. It turns out the club has been actively searching for a new home to build their own stadium for some time here and now they are getting closer.
Chivas USA In Discussions With Santa Ana For New Stadium
Chivas USA is hoping to get out of the Home Depot Center in the near future with a move potentially to Santa Ana.
A report in the Orange County Register on Wednesday suggests the club is close to having a deal in place with the city on Santa Ana, an Orange County suburb about 28 miles from their current home that would fit them naturally with the Mexican roots in the area.
While talks until now have been informal, Chivas USA has indicated a desire to enter more formal negotiations with a view to building a stadium and practice fields on the site of Willowick Golf Course in northwest Santa Ana, Pulido said. Hence the six-month agreement.
The report is kind of interesting as it talks about how the talks between the city and the club have been informal and formal to say the very least. From what it sounds like both sides want to get things going here.
Getting Chivas USA out of the Home Depot Center has been a priority for some time for the club. There was always a concern that the club would eventually just move to somewhere like San Diego instead of another suburb of Los Angeles.
This is all good news for a club that has really failed to establish their own identity since joining Major League Soccer for the 2005 season. Getting out of the shadows of the Los Angeles Galaxy will certainly help and will only help intensify their rivalry with the Galaxy.
