Mallorca Vs. Real Madrid, 2012 La Liga: Final Score, Los Merengues Complete Comeback To Seal Win

Real Madrid dug themselves an early hole and appeared as if they were going to drop points for the majority of their match against Mallorca, but eventually found a way to take the lead and capture the win. Mallorca defended well and Madrid had a goal questionably disallowed, but they were eventually saved by Jose Maria Callejon, who scored a fantastic winner for Los Merengues in the 84th minute.

Tomer Hemed stunned Madrid with the opening goal, netting with a 39th minute header after a short corner kick. Madrid's defending on the corner was terrible, and between that and their very average attacking movement in the first half, Jose Mourinho had every right to be unhappy with his team.

They looked like a much better side in the second half, as Gonzalo Higuain entered at halftime for Lassana Diarra. Mallorca put all 11 men behind the ball, making the role Lass was playing more or less irrelevant. Mourinho would make two further attacking changes in the 59th minute, bringing on Kaka and Fabio Coentrao for Alvaro Arbeloa and Marcelo.

The breakthrough came in the 72nd minute, with Mesut Özil brilliantly creating the chance with a stunning through ball to Higuain. Pipita's shot took a deflection, then looped over Dudu Aouate into the back of the net to give Madrid their equalizer. They looked more confident from then on and very likely to score a winner. It came four minutes later, but was controversially disallowed. Sergio Ramos headed in a Xabi Alonso free kick in the 76th minute, but his goal was disallowed for offside. On replay, Ramos appeared to be level with the second to last defender when the ball was played in.

Ultimately, the call would be irrelevant, as Callejon would find the winner eight minutes later. Following a scramble that saw Aouate make saves on both Higuain and Karim Benzema, the ball deflected outside of the box to Callejon. From 20 yards, he took a shot on the half-volley that took a deflection off a defender, causing it to dip into the back of the net and giving Aouate no chance to make a save.

Madrid now have an eight-point lead at the top of La Liga on Barcelona, who play tomorrow and can bring the gap back down to five points with a win.
