Gale Abossoumonde, the promising young United States defender, has turned down an offer from MLS, according to Soccer by Ives. Abossoumonde had been playing Eintracht Frankfurt, but has not seen much time on the field. He will apparently opt to remain under contract with Traffic Sports for one more year and play for the NASL’s Carolina Railhawks, while also playing for the United States U-23 team and hoping to impress enough at the Summer Olympics to get another shot in Europe.
Gale Agbossoumonde Turns Down MLS Offer, Report Says
Gale Agbossoumonde will reportedly play for the NASL’s Carolina Railhawks rather than take a Generation Adidas contract from MLS.
Abossoumonde has been one of the brightest young American defenders, but has had precious few opportunities to actually show that on the field. In the last couple years, Abossoumonde has bounced around from the second-tier of American soccer to Portugal to Sweden to Germany and now back to the NASL. He hasn’t managed to see the kind of playing time he really needs to develop, but he has still shown enough promise to earn a cap with the senior U.S. team.
Now, Abossoumonde will be betting on his own talents once again. The contract MLS offered him was reportedly on the low end of other Generation Adidas deals. While he’ll almost certainly make less than that at Carolina, he could see a massive raise if he can finally catch on with a European club. The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder is still just 20 years old, let’s remember and probably has the highest upside of any defender in the U.S. player pool.
