Phil Jones Suffers Ankle Injury; Out For ‘A Few Weeks’

Phil Jones suffered damaged ankle ligaments in Manchester United’s match against Arsenal and will be out until mid-February.

Manchester United's 2-1 victory against Arsenal last weekend turns out to have come at a price. 19-year-old Phil Jones, who's played at right back, midfield, and in the centre of defence so far this season after moving from Blackburn Rovers last summer, suffered an ankle injury in the first half of the match and was stretchered off the pitch. The scans are in now, and while the news is sub-pessimal it's not exactly great for United either. Said Sir Alex Ferguson:

It’s not good news for us. I think Jones will be out for a few weeks - it’s ankle ligaments. Carrick was feeling his hamstring in the second half and he just had to sit in the middle of the pitch.

With a projected return date of mid-February, Jones will certainly miss United's 4th-round FA Cup tie against Liverpool and looks in danger on missing out on their league matches away to Chelsea and at home to Liverpool. Jones, who's been described as one of United's key players by Ferguson, joins a list of injured players that actually looks longer than those available to him. It's a minor miracle that the team is doing so well this year with their butcher's bill so long.
