Carlos Tevez's holdout is costing him big. In fact, court documents have revealed that it has cost the Argentinean as much as £9.3 million and with Manchester City refusing to sell him on the cheap, that number could rise. The nearly £10 million figure comes from fines, lost wages and lost bonuses and since the Citizens continue to insist that any club pay full value for the striker, lessening the chance of a sale, Tevez is in line for more fines, lost wages and lost bonuses.

This is just the latest in the confusing, unusual and sometimes hilarious saga of Tevez and City. No one has doubted his quality when he actually plays for the club, but he has demanded transfers, then withdrawn his demands, then demanded a transfer again on multiple occasions. Earlier this season, he refused to go in the match when manager Roberto Mancini wanted to sub him on, resulting in a fine of two weeks' wages. and the striker's holdout was on.
City quickly suspended the striker and at the end of November, they stopped paying his wages. which accounts for £1.7 million in lost earnings. They also fined him six weeks’ wages, which amounted to £1.2 million, after a disciplinary hearing that took place when Tevez flew to Argentina mid-season and said he would not return to Manchester. Tevez appealed the fine, but it was upheld and now he has until the end of the month to appeal to the Premier League.
Finally, City refused to pay £6 million in loyalty bonuses to Tevez. All of the fines, withheld bonuses and withheld wages are a result of what City has determined to be gross misconduct. The dispute with Tevez has made City take a hardline stance on his sale too, insisting that their £25 million valuation be met.
“[Tevez] remains a player with contractual obligations to Manchester City for the next two and a half seasons,” City chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak said. “Unless we receive an offer that we deem appropriate, the terms of his contract will be enforced”.
AC Milan have bid £20.9 million, but City rejected that bid. With Paris Saint-Germain no longer an option, Milan appears to be Tevez’s only option and if they do not meet City’s valuation, he could be forced to remain with City while they continue to withhold wages and fine the striker.
The odds of City and Milan reaching an agreement are not in Tevez’s favor either with the Citizens under the impression that Milan and Tevez are acting unethically in negotiating a transfer themselves instead of leaving Milan and City to work on the details. This led al-Mubarak to say, “As things stand, Milan isn’t an option for Tevez.”
There is also the possibility that Tevez could end his strike and return to City to fulfill the terms of his contract, but that seems highly unlikely. Then again, at £9.3 million and possibly rising, the lost money could hit a number that motivates Tevez to play for City again, or at least go through enough of the motions to collect his check. Just another twist in the Carlos Tevez saga that refuses to end.
