Major League Soccer did the Cascadia Cup no favors when it created the schedule this season. Instead of having each of the Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps host a total of three games against each other, they created imbalance. The Sounders will host two, the Whitecaps three and the Timbers four.
Cascadia Supporters Groups Do Right Thing: Keep Cup Simple
It left the supporters groups, who actually decide how the Cascadia Cup is awarded, with a tough question: Is simplicity more important than fairness? Thankfully, they opted for simplicity as each of the nine Cascadia Cup games will count equally in the standings.
Sports are often at their best when figuring out who won a competition can be easily explained. Generally speaking, the more explanation something needs, the less interesting it is to the masses. Accessibility is key.
Supporters groups apparently understand this quite well. Knowing that the Cascadia Cup can only benefit by people understanding how it is won, they eschewed complexity. MLS should take note.
