While the league has not made an official announcement, numerous reliable sources such as Grant Wahl, Jeff Kassouf and Jenna Pel have confirmed that Women’s Professional Soccer plans to suspend operations for the 2012 season. The league is expected to speak publicly on the issue on Monday afternoon. The league has undergone a long sanctioning battle with the United States Soccer Federation and is currently involved in a legal battle with Dan Borislaw, the magicJack Boca Raton owner whose franchise WPS terminated.
WPS Reportedly Suspending Operations For 2012 Season
Women’s Professional Soccer is reportedly suspending operations due to legal costs associated with Dan Borislaw’s lawsuit and other financial issues.
Charles Boehm at National Soccer Wire acquired a copy of the email that WPS owners sent to players, explaining their decision to suspend operations. Said the email:
“Everyone has been trying so hard to keep things going - considering settlement options, discussing union legal action to intervene in the lawsuit, etc., but we just couldn’t manage to make things work.”
The lawsuit referred to in the email is the one filed by Borislaw, accusing WPS of a breach of contract. He had been attempting to force the league to re-instate his team. The legal costs involved with this lawsuit have been a significant financial burden for WPS, which was already struggling to stay afloat before their relationship with Borislaw went sour.
