Jermaine Jones decision to intentionally stomp on the foot of Marco Reus has earned him an eight-week suspension from the German Football Federation. Apparently his aplogy wasn't enough, as the federation found Jones guilty of "extreme sporting misconduct".

The stomp occurred in Schakle’s 3-1 loss to Borussia Moenchengladbach in a German Cup match two weeks ago. Jones’s suspension covers all competitions and will cost Jones six leage matches and keep him out until Schalke faces SC Freiburg in early March.

Check out the video of the incident:

The referee missed the actual incident, though Jones was later ejected from the match for a separate incident, which probably didn’t help the US international’s case. Schalke does plan to appeal the suspension, claiming the ban is out of proportion to similar incidents. Reus suffered a broken toe from the stomp, but is still playing thanks to a special shoe.

Schalke general manager Horst Held reacted to the suspension on the club’s official website:

”I don’t want to downplay this, it was an assault which requires a certain penalty.

“But there have been similar assaults which were then punished in the competition in which they took place.”

The incident earned Jones a great deal of critcism in Germany, incusling the uninvieably title of "The nastiest player in German soccer," from Stefan Giannakoulis of n-tv.
