According to multiple reports, Liverpool winger Stewart Downing was arrested early Sunday morning in Middlesborough on suspicion of assault. Downing was at a club where, according to the Daily Mail, he encountered an ex-girlfriend and an altercation eventually broke out. Allegedly, during this altercation, Downing struck the woman. Both Downing and the woman involved have been taken into police custody.

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has been arrested on suspicion of assault after an altercation at a Middlesborough night club.

Said a police spokesperson:
“Police were called to an incident at a pub on Yarm High Street. A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and a 32-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of assault. Both are in custody and inquiries are ongoing.”
Obviously, the police did not want to confirm that Downing was the 27-year-old man in question because, at the time, he had not yet been charged with a crime. Downing and the woman involved in the altercation started an incident in the club, were thrown out, and then began fighting again outside of the club when they were detained by police.
