England's 5-0 win over San Marino last night was tempered by news of an injury to Theo Walcott which will probably keep him out of Tuesday's clash against Poland in Warsaw.

The Arsenal winger picked up the injury when San Marino goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini charged into him in the fifth minute while attempting to cut out a through-ball, forcing his replacement by Aaron Lennon. Walcott was later admitted to hospital after having trouble breathing, and there are fears that he may have a broken rib.

Hodgson said after the game: “We have to wait to find out the extent of his injury. It doesn’t look good. If your goalkeeper does that, you’re lucky to have your goalkeeper on the field and not concede a penalty.

“He’ll be in hospital overnight for a scan. It’s a chest injury. Until they’ve X-rayed it and scanned it, we won’t know. It put a dampener on the evening, but there were positives, too.”

There will be some good news for Hodgson when England travel to Warsaw however, with Frank Lampard potentially available to play after missing the San Marino clash with injury. Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson will also be available after serving suspensions.
