Goals of the Week: Free-kick edition

Today’s top five features a selection of free-kicks and a couple of other fine efforts.

Shaun Botterill

5. Juan Mata, CHELSEA vs. Manchester United

Before Mark Clattenburg went rogue and started dishing out red cards and racial abuse to anyone in the vicinity, there was a happier, more innocent time. It was twenty minutes ago, when Juan Mata curled this fine effort home.

4. Emerson, GUARANI vs. Atletico PR

Is it as good as Mata’s? No. Is it by a goalkeeper? Yes. Does that make it a better goal? Obviously.

3. Mohamed Tchite, CLUB BRUGGE vs. Lokeren

Not a free-kick, but a lovely, elegant and powerful overhead kick from Belgium.

2. Gheorge Grozav, PETROLUL PLOIESTI vs. Brasov

This is a lovely, dainty goal from a player, club, and league you’ll probably never hear of again.

1. Juan Arango, BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH vs. Hannover ‘96

A free-kick, of course, to end the edition, with a wonderful bit of deception and technique to win the game.
