QPR vs. Southampton: Final score 1-3; Saints earn first away points

Julian Finney

A 3-1 home loss to Southampton means that Queens Park Rangers remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table -- a spot which they thoroughly deserve based on the way they're playing. QPR were thoroughly beaten by the Saints, who notched their second victory of the season in some style.

Rickie Lambert got them started when he bundled home following good work from Jason Puncheon, and the latter got a goal of his own when he cut inside and curled a lovely low effort past Julio Cesar just before halftime. By this point, the home support were already serenading embattled manager Mark Hughes with chants of 'you don't know what you're doing' -- they had a point -- and the second half didn't really go much better for QPR.

Junior Hoillet did pull one back in the 49th minute when Adel Taarabt's cross left him with a free header, but his goal failed to mark the start of a comeback, and Anton Ferdinand managed to put the result beyond doubt seven minutes from time with an unfortunate own goal from Morgan Schneiderlin's cross. At 3-1, Southampton were still going strong, and they closed out the match without too much trouble to secure a vital set of away points.

As for Mark Hughes... well, we’ll see if he’s still in a job come next weekend.
