Federico Higuain wins 2012 Newcomer of the Year

Columbus Crew’s Higuain wins the award despite playing in just 13 matches all season.

Jamie Sabau

Federico Higuain was named the 2012 MLS Newcomer of the Year, despite playing in just 13 matches and winning one of the three voting blocs. To his credit, Higuain made the most of his short time with the Columbus Crew.

After making his debut on Aug. 19, Higuain promptly scored or assisted in each of his first five appearances. During that time, the Crew went 4-0-1 and he registered three goals and six assists.

Although he and the Crew eventually cooled off -- he followed that up with a six-game pointless streak as the Crew fell out of the playoff race -- it appears media voters in particular mostly remembered that hot start. The media voting bloc gave him almost 31 percent of their vote. He finished second among the club bloc and third among players.
