A defensive battle and 1-0 victory for the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday was the prelude to Wednesday's second leg of the MLS semifinal series against the LA Galaxy, but it also gave the Earthquakes a buffer in the series finale at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The San Jose Earthquakes host the LA Galaxy in the second leg of a MLS semifinal series on Wednesday.

Coach Frank Yallop told his team that defense will continue to be the key to success despite the two teams combining for 16 goals in three regular season contests.
LA has yet to beat San Jose this season. The Earthquakes held a 2-0-1 record against the Galaxy coming into the postseason, and San Jose used a goal by Victor Bernardez in the 94th minute on Sunday to pull off yet another win against LA.
The Galaxy will have that acting as motivation as both teams face elimination. The winner of the series will move on to the MLS Western Conference finals and play the winner of Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders.
