Oriol Romeu to miss six months with injury

Chelsea’s midfield depth has gotten a bit thinner after Oriel Romeu underwent what amounts to season ending surgery on damage to his right knee

Chelsea's 21-year-old defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu will miss six month after undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery and repair on his medial meniscus yesterday. Romeu suffered the injury in the first half of Chelsea's win over Sunderland, rupturing his ACL and damaging the meniscus in his right knee.

As his teammates flew on to Japan for the Club World Cup, Romeu returned to London where the extent of the damage was diagnosed. The surgery was reportedly a success but the midfielder's rehab will likely leave him out for the remainder of the season. With Frank Lampard still coming back form calf issues, the injury leaves Chelsea rather thin in the midfield.

Romeu had made 33 appearances, nine during the current season, for Chelsea since signing from Barcelona in the summer of 2011.

Midfielder George Saville has replaced Romeu on Chelsea’s 23-man roster for the Club World Cup. The Blues face Mexican side Monterrey in the semifinal on Thursday.
