Slowly but surely, the NWSL is taking shape. Now that the league and all of its teams now have names, some of the finer details are coming to light. The latest formal announcement was that the college draft will be held on Jan. 18 and consist of four rounds, with the order being determined by random draw.

College draft will officially be held on Jan. 18, while national team players will reportedly be allocated before then with a third party determining which players will go to which teams.
Of potentially higher interest, though, is the report from Equalizer Soccer that gives some rough details of how the national team players from the United States, Canada and Mexico will be allocated. Each of the eight teams will draw up a list of which players they’d prefer to have and the roughly 52 players will draw up a list of which teams they’d prefer to play for. A third-party -- neither U.S. Soccer nor the teams -- will then play matchmaker and allocate the players. This will reportedly happen sometime before the start of the NSCAA convention on Jan. 16. The process is similar to the one that WPS used to allocate its players.
The remaining players will apparently have to fit into a $200,000 salary cap, with each player drawing some kind of salary. With rosters expected to be between 18-20 players, 6-7 of which will be subsidized, that leaves anywhere from 11-14 players needed to be paid out of that pot. That would put average salaries somewhere in the $14,000-$18,000 range.
