Manchester United might have snatched a very-hard-earned three points against Newcastle United despite going behind no fewer than three times at Old Trafford, but today hasn't exactly been a cavalcade of good news for the Premier League leaders. Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will be missing the next few weeks with a knee injury:

Said injury goes a long way towards explaining why the centre forward was out of action (and in a suite) for the 4-3 win against the Magpies, and fortunately it doesn't seem like a particularly serious one. Over the next fortnight there's nothing particularly onerous coming up on United's schedule, but after that, there's the derby against Liverpool on January 13th and then Tottenham Hotspur away on the 20th. Without Rooney available, those matches look a lot more difficult.
