Matteo Ferrari, the 32-year-old former Italy international, has joined the Montreal Impact in Los Angeles where they are currently training and is expected to sign soon. The centerback has spent time with some of Italy's biggest clubs and even has 11 international caps, but none since 2004. For the last he has been with Turkey's Besiktas, but was released back in August and hasn't played since.

The fact that the Impact are even in serious discussions with Ferrari would seem to be just the latest indication that coach Jesse Marsch is not planning to play Andrew Wenger at centerback. Wenger made his preseason debut at forward and has apparently indicated that's where he prefers to play right now.

If the Impact are able to sign Ferrari, that would likely mean a centerback pairing of him and Nelson Rivas. Both have played in Serie A, but are also coming into this season with questions about whether they can remain healthy.
