Bundesliga Week 22, Sunday Scores: Schalke Whip Wolfsburg, Hannover Down Stuttgart
Schalke absolutely thrashed Wolfsburg Sunday and pulled themselves just one point behind Bayern Munich in the table. Schalke nearly broke open the scoring with just six minutes gone when Julian Draxler’s shot hit the post. Just minutes later they did find the opener. Raul got onto the end of a corner kick and struck it in the back of the net. The Royal Blues were off to a flying start.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar made it 2-0 after only 15 minutes when he easily slotted home a cross from Christian Fuchs. Schalke were poised to make it 3-0 before the half, but Huntelaar saw his penalty stopped by Diego Benaglio.
Wolfsburg weren’t able to generate any momentum from the saved penalty, and it was Schalke that struck next. Joel Matip redirected a header on a corner kick with a brilliant backheel to make it 3-0. Huntelaar added a header to make it 4-0.
Schalke’s dominating performance will give some ease to supporters who were feeling lost after last week’s embarrassing performance against Mönchengladbach. All is not lost, and Schalke remain within striking distance of the top spots.
Hannover 4 - 2 Stuttgart
Hannover celebrated their 800th match in the Bundesliga in fantastic style. They bossed Stuttgart over the pitch on the way to a 4-2 victory.
Christian Pander brought his excellent crossing boots to the AWD-Arena. Two of his crosses in the first half found he heads of Karim Haggui and Mame Diouf who found the back of the net with superb goals. The home side was in front and weren’t looking back.
Pander turned goalscorer just after halftime when he found the back of the net following a corner kick. The hosts made it four when Lars Stindl volleyed it past Sven Ulreich.
Stuttgart finally found some life very late when Martin Harnik and Shinji Okazaki scored fantastic goals. It was too little too late.
