After nearly an hour of creating nothing in the way of chances, the United States has created a goal. Clint Dempsey did what he does best, disappearing for much of a match then popping up with a key goal and with a little more than 30 minutes to go, the U.S. leads Italy, 1-0, in Genoa, Italy.
Italy Vs. United States: Clint Dempsey Goal Gives USA 1-0 Lead
The play started with a good run by Fabian Johnson as he got forward from his left back spot to put the Italy back line under pressure. He popped a cross into Jozy Altidore, who redeemed a forgettable match (and that's putting it kindly) with some great hold up play. He gathered the ball in the middle of the box and with a defender all over him, he brought the ball down with a great touch before laying it off for an onrushing Dempsey. From there it was just a matter of Dempsey doing what he does best, slotting ball past Gianluigi Buffon and into the side netting to put the Americans on top.
