Aston Villa have begun planning for next season by announcing that AZ Alkmaar midfielder Brett Holman will join the club in the summer. The 27-year-old winger has spent nearly his entire career in the Netherlands, first signing for Feyenoord at the age of 17. Holman failed to make the grade at Feyenoord, spending an extensive period on loan at Excelsior before making the permanent move to NEC Nijmegen.

It was in 2008 he was signed by Louis Van Gaal for AZ Alkmaar, but failed to get significant playing time until Van Gaal was replaced by Dick Advocaat, who was a fan of Holman. Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish had this to say of his new signing;

A great team player and a man who is recognised in the game as a non-stop, committed wide midfield player. He has international experience and has played in the Champions League. He will add significantly to the experience in the Villa squad.

Having been previously courted by both Blackburn Rovers and Fulham, Holman was understandably delighted to finally make a move to the Premier League;

I’m delighted to have agreed terms with Aston Villa and I am looking forward to joining up in the summer. Villa have a long and prestigious history and a fantastic set of fans.

The Australian has 53 international caps to his name with 8 goals, making his debut in 2006 against Bahrain. Since then Holman has gone on to become a regular with the Socceroos, having cemented his place in the side with a string of fine performances during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
