Some scary news out of Spain today: Barcelona have confirmed that fullback Eric Abidal is set to undergo a liver transplant, a year after news first broke that the France international had a tumour in his liver. In between the removal of that tumour and this news, the 32-year-old had seemed to make a full recovery, and has played a major part in Barcelona's season so far. The news that he's having to undergo such a major procedure for a problem which seemed to have gone away will be a massive blow to the club.

Abidal’s last appearance was in late February against Atletico Madrid, and it’s an open question when he’ll next see the pitch. He recovered incredibly quickly last season and was fit enough to play in the Champions League final, but a liver transplant is a major operation and it’s probably a fair assumption that the defender won’t make it back this year. Hopefully he makes a full recovery and that the transplant solves his problem for good.
