Fabrice Muamba Situation Continues To Improve

There's been more positive news from the London Chest Hospital, where Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba is recovering following his cardiac arrest during the match against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. Earlier on Monday, Wanderers released a statement confirming that Muamba's heart was beating without the aid of medicine, and now they've released another update:

[Muamba] is currently able to breathe independently without the aid of a ventilator. He has also been able to recognise family members and respond to questions appropriately.

These are all positive signs of progress. However, his condition remains serious and the medical staff in intensive care will continue to monitor and treat him.

This is the first we’ve heard of Muamba regaining consciousness following his collapse at White Hart Lane, and the fact that he’s able to respond ‘appropriately’ to questions is a big deal, if not quite the huge news that him actually talking (reported by the AP) would be. The club has also stopped referring to the midfielder’s condition as critical, although it’s not entirely clear whether they’re using actual medical terminology in their releases. Either way, if you’re pulling for Muamba*, this is very good news indeed.

*I.e. you are a person who has heard of what’s happening.
