Sheanon Williams will replace Josh Gatt on the United States U23 roster as the team prepares for Olympic Qualifying next week, according to a report in Brotherly Game. Williams was one of the more notable players to be left off the original 19-man roster, but recent reports from elsewhere had indicated that he was likely to remain with the Philadelphia Union. Brotherly Game, though, is reporting that Williams has already flown to Nashville, Tenn. to join the U23s.

The roster spot was opened up when Gatt, a fullback, was recalled by his Norwegian pro club, Molde.
The addition of Williams would certainly make a lot of sense. Without Gatt, the U23s are down to five defenders and Jorge Villafana is really more of a midfielder anyway. Williams could well be the starting right back, although he'll be competing for minutes with Kofi Sarkodie and Zarek Valentin. Those two players have the benefit of having played for U23 coach Caleb Porter at Akron.
