Saturday Recap: Bayern Lose, Dortmund Win, And Hertha... Win?
Hertha picked up a massive, massive, massive victory at the Olympiastadion against Bremen. Nikita Rukavytsya scored the goal that stops a six straight losses for Hertha.
Hamburg 0-4 Stuttgart
Stuttgart put on another goalscoring clinic this week only this time on a better opponent. Vedad Ibisevic found the back of the net first he finished a cross from Tamas Hajnal. Hamburg's Slobodan Rajkovic conceded two penalties on the either side of halftime for fouls on Shinji Okazaki and Martin Harnik. Zdravko Kuzmanovic converted both penalties to give Stuttgart a three goal lead. Harnik scored a fourth in stoppage for his fifth straight match with a goal.
Kaiserslautern 0-0 Wolfsburg
Yeah... yawn.
Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich's shot at winning the title took a major hit when they suffered a 2-0 loss in Leverkusen. The first half was a wide open affair with chances on both sides. The biggest shocker of the first is that the match was scoreless. Manuel Neuer in particular was in stellar form early with some outstanding saves. Leverkusen continued to turn up the pressure on the Bayern defense in the second half and finally broke through in the 80th minute when Stefan Kießling finished coolly in front of the net. Bayern pushed for the equalizer with too many men forward and were caught out with Gonzalo Castro slotting the ball to Karim Bellarabi who scored his first Bundesliga goal.
Hannover 96 2-2 Augsburg
Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker converted a last minute penalty to help Augsburg steal a point on the road against Hannover. Karim Haggui equalized by heading home Christian Pander's corner kick. Mame Biram Diouf gave Hannover the lead with a header in the 69th minute. Unfortunately for the hosts, Christian Schulz fouled Marcel Ndjeng in the area with minutes remaining, and Callsen-Bracker converted he penalty to share the spoils.
Freiburg 2-1 Schalke 04
In the massive shock of the day, Schalke’s dreadful form continued and they fell on the road in Freiburg. Sebastian Freis bagged the opening goal for the hosts when he beat Timo Hildebrand to the near post. The referee awarded a questionable penalty to Freiburg in the second half when Jonathan Schmid fell in the area under a challenge by Kyriakos Papadopoulos. Daniel Caligiuri would step up and convert the penalty. Teemu Pukki was able to get a goal for Schalke, but they were unable to find an equalizer. Freiburg pulls themselves off the table bottom with the win.
Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Mainz 05
Dortmund extended their lead to seven points over second place Bayern Munich with a victory on Saturday. Jakub Blaszczykowski bagged the first goal when he scored the rebound off of a Shinji Kagawa shot. The hosts wasted several chances to extend their lead, and they were made to pay for it in the 75th minute when Mohamed Zidan scored his fifth goal in as many games to bring Mainz level. The lead lasted only a couple of minutes when Kagawa scored to give Dortmund their eighth straight, and new club record, win.
