Neither Newcastle United nor Sunderland have managed to escape the fallout from their ill-tempered 1-1 draw last weekend. A first half tackle on Danny Simpson from star winger James McClean sparked a bit of a contretemps which saw several players from both sides as well as both managers involved, and as a result the FA have charged the two sides with failing to ensure that their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion:

Sunderland and Newcastle United have both been charged with failing to control their players following ugly scenes during their 1-1 draw last weekend.

The charge is that the clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour and is in relation to an incident which occurred in the 19th minute following a challenge by Sunderland’s James McClean on Newcastle’s Danny Simpson.
Mike Dean ended up giving McClean and Simpson a booking apiece, but he wasn’t done with the card-waving - no less than nine yellows and two reds ended up being awarded as Newcastle earned a late draw. Presumably the charge will result in some minor fines for both teams - I can’t imagine that either one will do much in the way of appealling. And honestly, this is the Tyne-Wear derby. What exactly does the FA expect?
