Barcelona cruised past Getafe to increase the pressure on Real Madrid at the top of the table. Despite the visitors playing reasonably well -- they put real pressure on Victor Valdés' goal in the first half -- Barcelona were irresistible. Alexis Sánchez opened the scoring 13 minutes in, sending a wonderful curling effort past Miguel Moya after receiving a chested pass from Lionel Messi.
Barcelona Vs. Getafe, 2012 La Liga: Final Score 4-0 As Messi, Barca Cruise
Xavi thought he had made it two a few minutes later, only for Francisco Casquero to block his chip on (or perhaps behind) the line. From then on, Getafe got back into the game, pinning Barcelona back into their own half more or less until the break.
The “or less” part, however, featured Messi playing a one-two with Andrés Iniesta and blasting a shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-0. Things didn’t get any better for Getafe after the break.
Sánchez got his second in the 73rd minute via his head and another goal soon followed when Pedro nodded in Messi’s cross. After that, it became a matter of guessing how many Barca would end up scoring, but the hosts apparently weren’t in the mood to embarrass Getafe, leaving it at four.
The win brings Barca to within a point of Madrid at the top of La Liga, although Jose Mourinho's men do have a game in hand. Comeback on?
