The American scored his team-leading 14th Eredivisie goal of the season on Saturday with just your average 25-yard screamer that leaves the goalkeeper helpless and ignites wild cheers out of a small corner of the stadium while the home PSV crowd sits stunned. No big deal.
That goal got AZ level with PSV in a massive match that, if AZ wins, would put them joint top of the league with Ajax. It’s also Altidore’s team-leading 18th goal of the season, otherwise known as four fewer than he had in his entire club career prior to this season.
Hey, maybe the United States has themselves a real striker! You know, not the kind of striker that plays because the team requires one, but one who is playing because he is actually good and playing well. We’ll excuse Americans if they don’t remember what that’s like.
