Wolves’ Wayne Hennessey To Miss 9 Months With Torn ACL

Wolverhampton Wanderers might as well give up on their hopes to stay up this season. Wayne Hennessey has been diagnosed with a torn ACL, an injury he suffered in Wolves' draw against Sunderland on Saturday. The tear will require surgery to repair and will keep him out of action for approximately nine months. Wolves were already unlikely to avoid relegation; the loss of their best player pretty much puts the final nail in their coffin.

“He just felt his knee during the game,” Wolves interim manager Terry Connor said. “He went to catch a ball right at the end and didn’t think too much of it. But he felt slightly worse on Sunday, so the medical guys wanted him to have a scan.”

Somehow, Hennessey managed to finish the match at the Stadium of Light, but the scan revealed the tear and the end of Hennessey’s season. While he could return as soon as six months from now, nine months is being called the more likely target, which means he’s not expected to return until 2013.

Not only are Wolves hurt by an injury to their best player, they are now down a highly valuable transfer commodity. Having had a fantastic season, Hennessey had been linked to moves to several other Premier League clubs this summer. This injury, however, likely kills his value in the transfer market until he can return and prove himself healthy once again.
