Vincente Del Bosque Says He Has “Renewed” Deal With Spain

The 61-year-old has a new contract that will keep him in charge of the world’s top team through the 2014 World Cup.

The manager of the world's best international team will stay with them through the 2014 World Cup. Vincente del Bosque told Onda Cero radio on Tuesday that he had "renewed" his deal with Spain, ending speculation that he might step down from the helm of the Spain side at the end of the summer.

The 61-year-old del Bosque’s contract was set to expire after this summer’s European Championships and he had been offered a two-year contract extension a while ago. It has remained on the table and now del Bosque has decided to accept it, keeping him with the defending European and World Cup champions for an additional two years.

With a World Cup and Euro title already under his belt, there had been speculation that del Bosque felt that he had nothing left to prove internationally and wanted a return to club football. He is considered by some to be Real Madrid’s most successful manager in the modern era, having won two La Liga and two Champions League titles at the Bernabeu, and there was talk of his leading Los Merengues once again should Jose Mourinho leave the club in the summer.

With del Bosque tied to Spain through 2014 now, any speculation is moot. He will lead Spain in not just their Euro defense this summer, but when they defend their World Cup title in two years as well.
