Monterrey Vs. Santos Laguna, 2012 CONCACAF Champions League Final: Suazo Opens Scoring, Finally

We have a goal in the CONCACAF Champions League Final, folks. Humberto Suazo got the first goal of the game in the 60th minute off a pass from Aldo de Nigris. In such a big game, the best players are expected to step up, and Suazo has done so for Monterrey.

Less than a minute earlier, it seemed Santos Laguna would get the first goal. Darwin Quintero took a ball from the right wing and sent a sharp cross into the box. Herculez Gomez was able to beat the defender and got his head on the ball, but it went just wide of the top corner of goal.

From there, Monterrey marched down the other end of the field, de Nigris made a run with the ball toward the end line on the right flank, and sent an angled pass back toward Suazo in the center of the box. Suazo ran onto the ball and made no mistake with the shot. Although Santos keeper Oswaldo Sánchez had gotten the best of Suazo to that point, even taking physical punishment when Suazo slid into him with his studs up, Suazo took care of business to put the home team in the lead. Now, the next goal will be pivotal in seeing how these teams will play over the rest of the final.
