Less than a year after taking over as manager of Bayer Leverkusen, Robin Dutt has been relieved of his duties. The sacking comes on the heels of Saturday’s 0-2 loss to SC Freiburg. The rumors began swirling Saturday evening that Dutt would not remain the Werkself manager much longer.

Bayer Leverkusen have sacked manager Robin Dutt and replaced him with Sami Hyypiä.

In his debut press conference at Bayer, Dutt stated, “I haven’t come to Leverkusen to turn the runners-up spot into fourth or fifth position in the league. The only way forward is to aim for the top.” Leverkusen are currently 7th in the table on 40 points with six matches remaining.
“We had to act and make the change to give us new momentum in achieving our target for the season of qualifying for Europe,” declared Bayer 04 managing director Wolfgang Holzhäuser.
Sporting director Rudi Völler explained: “We’re looking for the Hyypiä/Lewandowski team to get us back on track and give us a boost. The first team know what they’ve got to do. Our ambitions at Bayer 04 are higher and we need to revive our campaign.”
Sami Hyypiä, former Finland international and Liverpool great, retired at the end of last season after two years with Bayer Leverkusen to pursue his coaching badges. Once they were received, he was hired as Leverkusen’s reserve team coach until this appointment. His top assistant will be Leverkusen’s U-19 coach Sascha Lewandowski.
All hope is not lost for Bayer supporters, and the management reign of Sami Hyypiä begins this weekend when the club travels to Hamburg.
