Mainz and Wolfsburg played to a scoreless draw on Friday evening. The point virtually ensures that Mainz will avoid the relegation playoff at the season’s end. For Mainz to slip into the playoff, they would have to lose out and Köln would have to win out AND make up a 29 goal difference. In other words, it’s not happening.
Mainz Vs. Wolfsburg, 2012 Bundesliga: Both Sides Settle For Scoreless Draw
Both sides produced chances, but Mohamed Zidan and Mario Mandzukic in particular were determined to see who could be the closest to almost score.
Zidan started his misses early when he caught up with a long ball and fired at the target. Wolfsburg's Diego Benaglio made a simple save to stop the Egyptian international. Zidan produced Mainz's best opportunity of the second half when he broke through the Wolfsburg backline again, but his shot was wide of the target.
Mandzukic had several opportunities in the dying minutes of the match, but none of his shots challenged Christian Wetklo.
The draw for Wolfsburg likely keeps them out of Europe for next season. The positive for Felix Magath’s side is that they managed to keep a clean sheet. It is their first since a visit to Kaiserslautern on March 3.
