Rene Adler Signs With Hamburg
Rene Adler has signed with Hamburg.

Adler was expected to continue his run as Leverkusen’s starting goalkeeper for the 2011-2012 season, but he injured his right knee during a preseason friendly against Red Bull Salzburg. While he was out with injury, Leverkusen experimented with David Yelldell and Fabian Giefer. After Yelldell looked out of his depth in his one start in the DFB Pokal and Giefer’s injury, Bernd Leno was brought in on loan from Stuttgart. Leno was eventually signed a full contract, and Adler was never able to win his starting job back.
Hamburg’s sporting director Frank Arnesen told Hamburg’s official website, “When you have the opportunity to sign a German international keeper at 27 years of age on a free transfer, it is a chance you have to take. You simply have to.”
