Al-Sadd Sports Club have announced via their website that they have signed Spanish legend Raul on a one year contract through the end of the 2012-2013 season. The press conference to introduce the forward will be held on Sunday, May 13.

A move to the Middle East has been rumored for some time now, but Qatar emerged as the front runner over the last couple of months. When he announced that he would be leaving Schalke and European football just before the end of the Bundesliga season, the general belief was that Al-Sadd in Qatar would be his destination, and today it is official. There was one, late, sad attempt by MLSsoccer.com to link Raul with a move to a Philadelphia Union, but it was never happening.

Al-Sadd finished fourth in the 2011-2012 Qatar Stars League and missed out on the 2013 Asian Champions League by only three points. Al Gharafa, the sixth place finisher, also qualified for the Champions League by winning the 2012 Emir of Qatar Cup.
