Alex McLeish Sacked As Aston Villa Manager

Alex McLeish has been sacked by Aston Villa after a hugely disappointing season for the club.

Alex McLeish was today relieved of his duties by Aston Villa, after a torrid season which saw the club finish two points and two places above the relegation zone, largely due to the ineffectual play of others as opposed to their own performances. McLeish was defiant after another lackluster performance from the Midlands side in a 2-0 defeat away at Norwich City, stating;

I’m not a quitter. I’ve been determined all my life. I’ve been quite successful in my career but, for three minutes last season and one goal, I would have been probably the greatest manager in Birmingham’s history, that’s how fine a line it is.

It seems that the Scot won't have to quit. Rumours were flying Monday morning that McLeish was at Aston Villa's Bodymoor Heath training ground to say his goodbyes to the players after late night discussions between himself and owner, Randy Lerner.

A club statement today read;

Aston Villa can confirm that Alex McLeish’s contract has been terminated with immediate effect.

The club has been disappointed with this season’s results, performances and the general message these have sent to our fans. The board wishes to assure supporters that we are conscious in every sense that Villa expects and deserves more and we will strive to deliver this.

Aston Villa fans will no doubt be rejoicing at the fact a manager they never wanted in the first place has finally been removed, although some would argue it's all a little too late after the side picked up just 7 wins this season, the second lowest in the division. Speculation has already begun as to who might be the next manager of the club, with Roberto Martinez, Steve Bruce and Mick McCarthy all leading the way with the bookmakers.
