Bayern Munich Vs. Chelsea, 2012 UEFA Champions League Final: Last Chance For Blues’ Current Generation

Since Roman Abramovich purchased Chelsea FC, the team has won three league titles, two League Cup titles and four FA Cup titles, while placing as runners-up in the UEFA Champions League one time. Hundreds of millions of pounds and multiple top managers have turned Chelsea into a world juggernaut after decades of underachieving. They have unquestionably become one of the biggest teams in world football.

Even with all of their successes, one trophy eludes them. Chelsea is still yet to win the UEFA Champions League, and this year's final against Bayern Munich might present the last chance for the current generation of Chelsea stars to do so. If Chelsea doesn't win on Saturday, they won't play in the competition next year, meaning that the likes of Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and John Terry might never have another shot to win the competition.

As Chelsea FC blog We Ain’t Got No History writes, this game is extremely important to the legacy of those players.

If we can beat Bayern Munich on Saturday, we’ll have sealed the legacy of the current generation of Chelsea players. In a few years time, nobody will care whether or not we play in next year’s competition, but they’ll certainly care whether or not Chelsea win this year’s. Champions League qualification is a transient concern. It’s an important one, for sure, and it’ll make Saturday more stressful, but what matters - what really, really matters - is that the Blues have a chance to win the whole thing.

Chelsea's long-time stars are already club legends, but they still have one trophy left to win.

We’ll have updates throughout the week in our 2012 UEFA Champions League Final StoryStream. For more on Bayern, head over to Bayern Munich blog Bavarian Football Works.
