Werder Bremen have signed manager Thomas Schaaf to a contract extension that will keep him at the club through the end of the 2013-2014 season. Schaaf has been the manager since taking over in 1999. Schaaf was not the only one to receive an extension. Assistant coaches Wolfgang Rolff and Matthias Hönerbach, and goalkeeping coach Michael Kraft were also rewarded by the club with extensions through the end of June 2014.

Schaaf told Werder.de, “I am happy to continue the successful work in the coming two years with the team and work on other tasks.”

Schaaf, 51, has been with Werder for his entire life. He joined the club’s youth system as an 11-year-old in 1972 and made his debut for the first team in 1978. Before he retired from playing in 1995, Schaaf had already started coaching in Bremen’s youth ranks. He progressed through the youth ranks before finally taking over after Felix Magath left at the end of the 1998-1999 season.

Under Schaaf, Bremen has been quite successful. They won the 2003-2004 Bundesliga and the 1999, 2004 and 2009 DFB-Pokal. The club were runners-up in the 2008-2009 UEFA Cup.
