Werder Bremen have signed Fortuna Düsseldorf standout Assani Lukimya-Mulongoti on a free transfer, securing his services through the end of the 2014-2015 season.

“His physical strength, pace and tackling ability will give more stability to our defence. We are pleased to have been able to convince Lukimya to join Werder Bremen,” sporting director Klaus Allofs said about the signing.

Lukimya is relishing this opportunity:

“Werder Bremen is a fantastic club, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. When I heard about their interest, I made my decision quickly. I had a great time at Fortuna Düsseldorf, and I love the club with tears in my eyes. But, as a footballer you want to develop, and when every single player in the squad has more quality, you will grow, too.”

Lukimya, 26, was generally regarded as the best defender in the 2. Bundesliga last season, and his play helped Düsseldorf earn promotion to the Bundesliga. Bremen conceded 58 goals last season, which was fifth-worst in the league.
