Sporting Kansas City Vs. San Jose Earthquakes, 2012 MLS: SKC Gets Back On Track

Uh oh, Sporting Kansas City might be back. After starting the season sensationally and being anointed by seemingly everyone as the best team in MLS, Sporting went more than a month without a win. That streak is now over thanks to a 2-1 win over a very good San Jose Earthquakes side that had Kansas City looking like one of the best in MLS once again.

Sporting got on the scoreboard after just five minutes thanks to a fine cross by Kei Kamara and a smart finish by C.J. Sapong. The home side broke quickly and got the ball wide to Kamara on the left, who hit a good cross to the middle. Sapong, in full sprint and under pressure from a defender, hit Kamara's cross with his first touch and left Jon Busch no chance for the early Sporting lead.

After a bit of a lull that saw both teams struggle to create much of anything, Sporting doubled their lead just before halftime. Chance Myers whipped in a good cross from the left right to the top of the six-yard box. Ramiro Corrales never bothered to find Kamara so while Corrales was waiting for the ball to come to him, Kamara was able to sneak in front of the Quakes defender. He attacked the ball and headed it past Busch to stretch the Sporting lead to 2-0.

In the 72nd minute, San Jose did their best to get back in the match when Simon Dawkins finished well, curling the ball around Jimmy Nielsen, but it wouldn't be enough. The Quakes looked shaky in the attack without Chris Wondolowski for most of the match and Sporting picked up a deserved 2-1 win to get back on track.
