Bayern Munich have announced the signing of Dutch winger Arjen Robben to a two-year contract extension on Thursday, quieting down reports that the 28-year-old might have been looking to leave after a confrontation with fellow wideman Franck Ribery in April. The deal means that Robben will stay at the Allianz Arena until the close of the 2014/15 season.

Robben claims that he has signed the extension because of his hopes of winning more trophies (presumably the Bundesliga title is at the top of Bayern’s wishlist after being pipped to the top twice in a row by Borussia Dortmund) and his familiarity with the club:
I’ve always said that I feel great in Munich and at FC Bayern. That’s why I was happy to extended my contract here. FC Bayern is like a family for me, two of my three children were born in Munich and my family and I feel at home here. In sporting terms, the extension is the right decision too as we have a terrific team and I’m sure that we’ll have great success in the coming years.
It’s more difficult to understand from Bayern’s perspective - with Xherdan Shaqiri coming in from FC Basel and Robben’s extensive injury history and high salary, it would have made some sense to move him on sooner than later. Still, when Robben’s on, he can make a big difference in their fortunes, and the club will be hoping that they can get a few more good years out of him
