Spain beat Croatia, 1-0, on Monday to help them win the group. It also helped Italy go onto the quarterfinals and eliminate Croatia (Note: It did not determine who went on because a 0-0 draw still sends Croatia out, but it changed the complexion of the game and did get Spain the top spot). But there was a question, was Spain's lone goal, scored by Jesus Navas a legitimate one?
Offside Or Not Offside: Was Spain’s Goal Vs. Croatia Good?
As soon as Navas knocked the ball in the net all of the Croatian players were clamoring for offside. It was close ... very close.
Keep in mind that the ball was played into Andres Iniesta, who is on the far side, and not Navas on the near side, so where Navas is does not matter. If Iniesta is offside then it is by millimeters.
If Croatia want to appeal to the ref for ruining them then they might be better off asking why a penalty was not awarded moments earlier when Sergio Busquets dragged down Vedran Corluka. That potential goal would have put Croatia through, with a 1-1 draw and Italy 2-0 win seeing Croatia through.
This offside, though, looks like the linesman got it right. What do you think?
