Helder Postiga To Miss Portugal’s Semifinal With Thigh Injury

The thigh injury that Helder Postiga suffered in Portugal’s quarterfinal win will keep him out of the team’s Euro 2012 semifinal contest.

Portugal will be without Helder Postiga for their Euro 2012 semifinal after the striker suffered a thigh injury in their quarterfinal win over the Czech Republic. Postiga went down without contact and was immediately subbed out of the match so for this to be a serious injury that keeps him out of the semifinals isn't a surprise, but it is a blow to the Portuguese's chances.

Postiga hasn't played particularly well in Euro 2012 so on the surface it may not seem like much of a blow, but his replacement Hugo Almeida has been worse. There will be a drop off and with the winner of Spain vs. France looming, the Portuguese can't afford to be any weaker, but they will be.

With Postiga out and Almeida up top, more will be asked of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, especially Ronaldo. Asking more of him is tough considering how much of a burden he already carries, but such is the case for Portugal as they get ready to play one of the best teams in the tournament without their starting striker.
