Any observer of MLS can tell this has been a special season for the San Jose Earthquakes. After finishing as one of the worst teams in the league a year ago, they are flying high at the top of the Supporters' Shield race and making comeback victories look routine. As they continue to work toward opening their soccer-specific stadium sometime in the next couple years, the Earthquakes' front office deserves credit for pulling out all the stops, too.
Earthquakes Finally Seem To Be Grabbing Bay Area’s Attention
Blessed with a team full of outgoing and likable -- if you are a fan of the team, at least -- players, they have structured a narrative that seems to have caught on. Steven Lenhart, who seems to be the ringleader of most of this, adopted the slogan “Goonies never say die,” and the Earthquakes have run with it.
In addition to announcing that they'd be having a "Steven Lenhart Wig Night" on July 28, they put out this video in advance of their June 30 game against the LA Galaxy:
It all seems to be working quite well. Almost a week before the game against the Galaxy, the Earthquakes have announced that they’ve sold out 50,000-seat Stanford Stadium. According to a press release, it’s the first time in franchise history that they’ve ever sold out before the day of the actual game.
There’s still a long way to go for the Earthquakes to really grab a hold of the Bay Area market, but this seems to be the best sign yet that it’s at least possible.
