Going out of Euro 2012 without a point embarrassed Bert van Marwijk enough that he has resigned as Netherlands manager. It ends a four-year reign of the Oranje for van Marwijk, which was very successful until this summer. He led the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final and his team dominated qualifying for Euro 2012, but things fell apart in Ukraine and they lost all three matches.
Bert Van Marwijk Resigns As Netherlands Manager
Netherlands’ horrendous Euro 2012 has resulted in the resignation of manager Bert van Marwijk.
Prior to managing the Netherlands, van Marwijk earned plaudits for his two spell managing Feyernoord. He also spent two years managing Borussia Dortmund, this after a long and successful playing career.
van Marwijk’s resignation comes as no surprise following the Dutch’s Euro disappointment. He met twice with the Netherlands FA following the tournament and this is the result. He had a contract to manage the team through 2016, but that wasn’t going to be enough to keep him in charge.
The Netherlands FA has not announced a replacement for van Marwijk, nor is there any speculation yet as to who will take over the post. Qualifying for the 2014 World Cup does not get underway until September so they do have time to make a decision.
