Philadelphia Union defender Raymon Gaddis was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for his challenge of Sporting Kansas City’s Roger Espinoza in last Saturday’s game. The MLS Disciplinary Committee ruled that the challenge was “reckless” and “endangered the safety of his opponent.” Gaddis was shown a yellow card at the time of the incident, a decision that seems highly suspect upon replay.

The decision not to red card Gaddis ended up being a rather large one. Although the Union went on to win the game 4-0, they were up just 1-0 at the time of the foul. A red card there could have swayed the momentum significantly.

Gaddis will be forced to miss Saturday’s game at the Houston Dynamo. The rookie broke into the starting lineup in the Union’s fifth game and has started all but one match since then. He was replaced by Michael Lahoud in the previous game he missed.
