Borussia Mönchengladbach have announced the signing of Alvaro Dominguez from Atletico Madrid on a five year contract through 2017. The transfer fee was not disclosed, but it is estimated to be around €8 million.

“The club has just come off the back of a fantastic season, and it would be great if we could build on that and finish towards the top of the table next season, too.” Dominguez continued, “If we all work towards achieving this goal I am sure that we can do it.”

Dominguez, 23, will slide right into the left centerback position vacated after Dante’s move to Bayern Munich. He will partner with Roel Brouwers in the middle of the Bundesliga’s (statistically) second best defense last season.

Since signing his first professional contract in 2009, Dominguez made 76 La Liga appearances for Atleti, and he became first choice in the 2010-2011 season and continued his solid form into last season. He made his full international debut this summer in a series of pre-Euro 2012 friendlies. In 2011, Dominguez was part of the Spain squad that won the U-21 European Championship.

He’s the third player Gladbach has signed this summer joining Peniel Mlapa and Granit Xhaka. The club will enter the Play-off Round of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League. With Dante, Marco Reus and Roman Neustädter leaving the club this summer, Gladbach will need to continue to strengthen their roster if they have any hopes of competing on three fronts this season.
