When Edgar Castillo has played for the United States in the past, he’s been useful going forward but has looked very poor defensively at left back. He’s been great going forward so far and even had a great shooting attempt, but we knew he could do that. His attacking skills aren’t a concern -- it’s his defense that’s questionable.
Another Note On Edgar Castillo
At his club team, Tijuana Xolos, he plays as a wingback ahead of a three-man back line, so he has less defensive responsibility than he does with the United States. Against teams with speedy wingers who look to make runs behind the fullbacks when they get forward, he can get torched.
It looks like Canada right winger Tosaint Ricketts is either not supposed to do that or not capable of doing that, which is both good and bad for the United States. The good news is that Castillo can play his natural game tonight and he’s going to look good. The bad news is we won’t learn anything about whether or not he’s improved defensively, and this is a friendly. The point is to learn things about your team.
