Borussia Mönchengladbach has reached an agreement to sign FC Twente’s Luuk de Jong on a five year contract. While the transfer fee was not released, it is believed to be €15 million making him the most expensive transfer in Gladbach’s history.

Luuk De Jong has joined Borussia Mönchengladbach on a five year deal from FC Twente. The forward was signed on a record transfer fee and will have to replace the scoring of Borussia Dortmund bound Marco Reus.
“I don’t feel under any extra pressure to be honest,” De Jong responded to the transfer fee. “The transfer was a big step for me. It’s certainly a lot of money for Borussia to pay for me, but my aim is to work hard every day and try to make myself a better player. Then I can show my quality on the pitch and start paying the club back with my performances.”
De Jong, 21, was in stellar form for Twente last season racking up 32 goals in all competitions. He was the second leading scorer with 25 goals in the Eredivisie last season behind new Wolfsburg signee Bas Dost. The forward was part of Twente’s first ever title winning side in the 2009-2010 season.
“In Luuk de Jong we have signed a hugely talented forward who though he is only 21 already has a wealth of international experience with Twente and Holland,” sporting director Max Eberl said.
Replacing the production of Marco Reus will be difficult. Reus finished the season with 18 goals and 8 assists before he was sold to the champions Borussia Dortmund. De Jong’s addition could potentially lead to a slight change in tactics for Lucien Favre, as he has not replaced Reus like-for-like.
De Jong is the fourth big signing for Gladbach this summer. He joins Granit Xhaka, Peniel Mlapa, and Alvaro Dominguez as the club attempts to replace players and strengthen their side ahead of their Champions League campaign.
