Prior to the start of Italy's Euro 2012 campaign, azzurri forward Antonio Cassano was asked what he thought of the rumors that two of his national side teammates were secretly gay. Why reporters would ask a footballer that question is anyone's guess, but Cassano replied in about the least sensitive way possible by stating "That's their problem. I hope there isn't [a homosexual] in the national team".
Antonio Cassano Fined €15k For Anti-Gay Comments
The comments sparked controversy at the time, but no immediate action was taken. Well after the fact, Cassano’s been hit in the wallet for his comments. UEFA has hit him with a fine of €15k, and he’s issued an apology over the manner.
“I am sincerely sorry that my comments have caused controversy and protests among gay groups. Homophobia is not a point of view that I share. I didn’t want to offend anyone and I absolutely don’t want to put a person’s sexual freedom under discussion.”
Whatever Cassano meant by his initial comments, he’s probably learned to hold his tongue in the future.
